Poliisi on pidättänyt Washingtonissa 71-vuotiaan miehen epäiltynä vuonna 1957 tapahtuneesta lapsen kidnappauksesta ja murhasta.

Epäilty asui vaimonsa kanssa eläkeläisten asuinalueella Washingtonissa. Hän oli elänyt vuosikymmeniä tekaistulla nimellä.

7-vuotias Maria Ridulph katosi kesken leikkiensä vuonna 1957 Sycamoren kaupungissa lähellä Chicagoa. Tyttöä etsittiin viikkokaupalla sekä poliisin että FBI-agenttien voimin. Hänen jäännöksenä löytyivät läheisestä metsästä neljä kuukautta myöhemmin.

Tuo viittaaisi siihen, että poliisi on todella varma tapauksen ratkeamisesta ja todistusaineisto epäiltyä vastaan on vankkaa. Toki poliisin pitäisi muistaa, että epäilty on syytön kunnes toisin oikeudessa todistetaan.

Junalippu ratkaisemassa pikkutytön 50 vuotta vanhan murhan

54 vuotta jatkunut pienen Maria Ridulphin murhamysteeri on ratkeamassa vihdoin, kun yllättäen löytynyt todiste mursi pääepäillyn alibin.

Maria Ridulphin katoaminen lähellä Chicagoa joulukuussa 1957 aiheutti valtavat etsinnät, joita valvoi jopa presidentti Dwight Eisenhower. Tytön ruumis löytyi viisi kuukautta myöhemmin metsästä yli sadan kilometrin päästä.

Jack Daniel McCullough told The Associated Press in a jailhouse interview Thursday night that he wants justice to be done for 7-year-old Maria Ridulph. He says that he had traveled to Chicago for military medical exams that day – as he has always maintained.

The 71-year-old was arrested in Seattle last week after investigators said new evidence undermined that alibi. A police affidavit says his high school girlfriend recently discovered his train ticket to Chicago, but it was unused.

McCullough tells the AP there's a good reason it was unused – he never used it. He says his stepfather gave him a ride, and that archived military records from that day should exonerate him.

Body of slain Sycamore girl exhumed, suspect back in Illinois

As the man accused of killing a 7-year-old Sycamore girl returned to the town where she was abducted more than a half century ago, authorities are hoping another look at her remains will help them convict him of her murder.

Jack Daniel McCullough was brought back to Sycamore Wednesday afternoon from Seattle, where the 71-year-old had been held as a fugitive from justice since his July 1 arrest in the killing of Maria Ridulph.

Earlier in the day, Maria’s remains were exhumed from the Elmwood Cemetery. And while investigators consulted her surviving siblings before disturbing her grave, one of her brothers said that their family is agonized by the exhumation and by all the attention being refocused on the long-ago murder.

But 65-year-old Charles Ridulph of Sycamore said they understand the need to dig up their sister’s body.

“We are thankful about how all the agencies involved have so respectfully treated our family,” he said. “We have been given as much information as we need to know and have received advance warnings so we wouldn’t be shocked by information in the press.”

Maria’s oldest sibling said she cried after hearing of the exhumation, even though she knew it was going to happen.

“It’s brought it back again and crammed it into our faces,” said Patricia Quinn, 70, of Morris. “I had put it to rest a long time ago.”

Representatives of the Illinois State Police, FBI, Sycamore Police Department, DeKalb County state’s attorney’s and coroner’s offices were present for the exhumation, which came weeks after authorities announced they’d arrested McCullough in Seattle and charged the onetime police officer with the Dec. 3, 1957, abduction and killing of the girl. Maria was abducted by a man as she played outside her home in Sycamore.

McCullough, a onetime resident of Sycamore, waived his right to extradition earlier this month.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Wednesday that McCullough was released from King County Jail in Seattle. He arrived in DeKalb County later Wednesday afternoon, and has a court hearing Thursday morning in Sycamore.

State’s Attorney Clay Campbell said investigators asked a judge on Friday to order the exhumation only after intense consideration about whether the potential benefits would be worth the pain to the family. He said experts assured them that even after so many years, specialists probably could find evidence on Maria’s body — especially involving DNA — that was impossible for pathologists to find as they examined the corpse in 1958.

“We don’t know what we will find, but we would be remiss if we didn’t use the best tools available,” Campbell said.

He went on to say that “all the experts this morning were very, very satisfied with what we found” in the grave. Maria’s remains were taken to the county coroner’s office to be examined by experts loaned from the Cook County medical examiner’s office plus state and local specialists, authorities said

Campbell said the original autopsy of the four-months-dead body concluded only that the girl had died from “foul play.” He declined to say what injuries Maria had sustained or whether advanced science might be able to determine more exactly what caused her death.

One cold-case expert said a body that’s been in a casket for more than 50 years might still reveal evidence crucial to prosecutors. Some of that information has nothing to do with a suspect but could nevertheless derail any prosecution if authorities leave any doubt about some very basic questions, said Richard Walton, an assistant professor of criminal justice at Utah State University who is the author of the book “Cold Case Homicides: Practical Investigative Techniques.”

“They might consider fingernail scrapings today to determine if there is any DNA,” Walter said, explaining that, while some DNA degrades over the years, some can still be used.

The key, he said, is the condition of the body, as everything from whether the body was embalmed to whether water seeped into the casket or bugs got inside will determine if there is any useful information.

“You’re not going to know what you have until you open it up,” he said.

McCullough has maintained his innocence. He was arrested early this month at the Seattle retirement home where he was living and working as a night watchman. His arrest came after investigators said newly uncovered evidence undermined his alibi in the disappearance of the 7-year-old girl.

McCullough, then known as John Tessier, lived near Maria in Sycamore, which is about 50 miles west of Chicago, and he matched the description of the suspect given immediately after the disappearance by her then-8-year-old friend, Cathy Sigman, who last saw her around 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, 1957. Sigman said she left Maria with a young man and ran home to get some mittens; when she returned 15 minutes later, the two were gone.

Thousands of people joined in the search for the missing girl, and fearful parents kept their children locked indoors. The case ultimately caught the eye of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who requested daily updates.

The girl’s remains were found the following April in Jo Daviess County in far western Illinois, about 120 miles from Sycamore.

In a jailhouse interview on July 7, McCullough said he didn’t kill the girl and maintained the same alibi he gave when first questioned by investigators when he was 18: that he could not have committed the murder because he had traveled to Chicago that day for military medical exams before enlisting in the Air Force.

Police haven’t revealed why they took another look at Ridulph’s case.

McCullough said he himself, called the FBI in roughly 2008 to report that a dream prompted his recollection of another boy who lived in the neighborhood and fit the suspect’s description.

Investigators started talking to McCullough’s relatives and other witnesses. According to a probable cause statement filed in the case, when they spoke with his high school sweetheart last year, she pulled out a decades-old framed photo of them and found his train ticket for Chicago that day — unused.

Detectives wrote that when McCullough was questioned in 1957, he claimed he had traveled to Chicago by train.

Sigman picked McCullough’s photo out of a montage detectives showed her last September. She said she wasn’t asked to identify McCullough as the suspect immediately after the slaying.

McCullough said he doesn’t know how his high school sweetheart wound up with the ticket, but it was unused because his stepfather gave him a ride to Chicago for the exams, and afterward someone he met there gave him a ride to Rockford. From Rockford, a drive of more than 40 miles from Sycamore, he called home to ask his stepfather to come pick him up, he said.

Investigators say they’ve confirmed a collect call was made from Rockford to McCullough’s home in Sycamore just before 7 p.m., slightly less than an hour after Ridulph disappeared.

Rockford is also roughly on the way from Sycamore to where the girl’s body was eventually discovered, in far northwestern Illinois.

Police have suggested that even if McCullough did go to Chicago that day, he could have been back in time to commit the crime. When he was first questioned, he told investigators that his military exams had ended by noon, the affidavit said.

The police affidavit also alleged that McCullough has a history of molesting girls. One young witness told agents in 1957 that he had sexually abused her on numerous occasions, and in the early 1980s he lost his job with the Milton police department in Washington state after he was accused of sexually abusing a runaway in her early teens. He pleaded guilty in 1983 to unlawfully communicating with a minor.

Ymmärrän tämän siis niin, että oikeudenkäynti ei voi alkaa ainakaan ennen tammikuun 20. päivää, sillä vasta tuolloin oikeus ilmoittaa, mitä se on päättänyt puolustuksen esitäämien pyyntöjen suhteen.

Fox newsin mukaan tuomari James Hallock julisti ex-poliisi Jack McCulloughin syylliseksi Sycamoren tuomioistuimessa tänään perjantaina.

McCullough oli 17-vuotias, kun toisella luokalla ollut Maria Ridulph katosi kotikaupungissaan vuonna 1957.

Myöhemmin McCullogh värväytyi armeijaan, jonka jälkeen hän muutti Seattleen ja aloitti työt poliisina.
