1. huhtikuuta 2015 NBC News

A state transportation crew found human remains in a suitcase Thursday along a highway near Salt Lake City, Utah, authorities said, stressing that it was too early to know whether the remains were those of Elizabeth Elena Salgado, the Provo woman who's been the subject of a national missing persons alert since last week.

The state Transportation Department said the crew was installing a cable barrier along Interstate 80 near the Saltair Resort on the shore of the Great Salt Lake when a worker spotted the suitcase about 2:45 p.m. (4:45 p.m. ET). The worker called the state Highway Patrol and discovered the body inside when the trooper arrived.

State Bureau of Investigations Lt. Jared Garcia told reporters Thursday night that the body was too badly decomposed to immediately confirm its age or sex. But police in Provo, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, told the Deseret News and NBC station KSL that they were working with state agents to determine whether it is that of Salgado, 26, who was last seen April 16 near a Provo language school.

Salgado's parents arrived Wednesday in Utah from Mexico to help search for their daughter, whom hundreds of volunteers have been looking for since she disappeared.

Family visits site where Elizabeth Salgado's body was found

The Salgado family held a memorial Friday at the site deep in Hobble Creek Canyon where their daughter, sister and niece — Elizabeth Elena Laguna-Salgado — was found.

Accompanied by Mexican Consulate members and Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Elizabeth Salgado’s family — her mother, father, two sisters, two brothers and two uncles — traveled to the remote spot where her remains were found.

A man was driving up Hobble Creek Canyon above Springville on May 18 when he pulled off the side of the road to go to the bathroom, heading about 20-30 yards off the road up the hill into the bushes. That’s where police say he found Salgado’s remains, including a skull and pieces of clothing.

The site is very remote — about 11.5 miles up the Right Fork Hobble Creek Road — and nowhere near campgrounds, turn offs or trailheads.

“It is a miracle Elizabeth was found here,” said Rosemberg Salgado, Elizabeth Salgado’s uncle.

Cannon inferred the same sentiment, explaining that had the man stopped even just 50 yards up or down the road, Salgado would have remained unfound. Preliminary study of the remains so far in the investigation indicate she was dead for nearly three years.

“A person could drive by this spot 1,000 times, and even if they know what they are looking for, they wouldn’t have found her,” Cannon said. “We feel very fortunate the gentleman stopped where and when he did.”

Cannon led the way up the hillside to the site where Salgado’s remains were found. As the wind rustled nearby aspen and oak trees, the family hugged and cried together as they planted a cross at near her last resting place. They added roses and flower bouquets and pictures of their daughter before kneeling and praying together.

Her mother, Libertad Edith Salgado-Figueroa, led the praying, and with passion and emotion in her voice, she expressed her gratitude to God for sending the family “her angel, her princess, her warrior.” She prayed that Elizabeth Salgado has been received into God’s embrace and that her family will be able to join her someday.

While the family kneeled together, Elizabeth Salgado’s sister and father found some additional tiny pieces of remains. They passed these to Cannon, and he said he will take them to the Medical Examiner’s Office as evidence. Cannon had hoped investigators had found all the evidence, but said this can happen with skeletal remains left for longer times.

Elizabeth Salgado’s remains are still under investigation through the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Cannon said that, while they are treating the investigation as a homicide, they have not determined the cause or place of death at this time.

This was the family’s second visit to the site, and Cannon believes it may be the last time they will be able to visit the site. The family is from southern Mexico, and is only here for a few days.

“It’s important for them. The family is sharing this place with her, where she was for nearly three years. This is where Elizabeth’s last days were,” Cannon said.

Rosemberg Salgado said Friday was very difficult for the family. They had hoped to see her again in this life.

“The Lord helped us. We were praying and praying for her to be found. Now we are praying to find the monster or monsters who did this to my niece,” he said.

He and the family pleaded with anyone who might have any information about Elizabeth Salgado’s disappearance to come forward. Cannon hopes people will remember something they saw three years ago that, at the time didn’t seem odd, but now does — like a car parked at the curve on the dirt road near the site, or seeing Elizabeth getting into a vehicle in Provo.

“Please put yourself in our place. We are suffering this tragedy. Don’t keep it to yourself. Say what you know,” Rosemberg Salgado said.

Anyone with information can all the Utah County Sheriff’s Office at (801) 851-4000. Rosemberg Salgado said anyone who might be afraid to approach the police, can reach out to him personally at (801) 836-5697, and he will share their tips with authorities.
