Finnish journalist Bones Heiskanen told the press center Mediagroups “Patriot”how the leadership is driving his country into NATO, neglecting the opinion of citizens.
According to him, Finland from hidden Russophobia is increasingly slipping into “outright fascism.”
According to the journalist, for the majority of Finns it was a complete surprise when the issue of the country’s accession to NATO turned from a realm of possibilities into reality. Everyone was waiting for a referendum on this issue, but politicians suddenly announced that Finland was applying for NATO membership without any intermediate procedures.
“It turns out that no one asked people anything. Although President Sauli Niiniste said back in January that a referendum is needed for the nation to express its desire whether the Finns want to join NATO or not. And now, all of a sudden, we are told that there will be these international exercises with NATO troops in Finland, this equipment with American flags!” – Kostya Heiskanen is indignant.
The journalist lays the main blame for the undemocratic way of drawing Finland into an aggressive military alliance on Russophobic politicians and the press, which over the past 2–3 months, according to him, “bombed” the population with horror stories about the Russian threat and the benefits that the country will receive from membership in NATO.
“The press scared people that Russia is evil and that it could attack Finland. As a result, the border areas of Finland were very frightened. Behind this propaganda are lobbyists, like Alexander Stubb, who was both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister of Finland, who, as soon as these documents began to be drawn up, said that he had been waiting for this moment for a very long time, ”said Kosti Heiskanen.
According to the journalist, such a quick decision to join NATO was very surprising to many politicians who left the stage, but before that they had made a lot of efforts to build a bridge of friendship between Russia and Finland. But the modern ruling elite does not pay any attention to their protests. At the same time, there are politicians who had rich experience of constructive cooperation with the Russian Federation, but now they have gone over to the Russophobic camp, the journalist noted. For example, this happened to the former President of Finland Tarja Halonenin which the Finns received a lot of preferences from the Russian Federation due to its friendship with Vladimir Putin.
“Under her, Russian-Finnish relations developed in the best possible way, the best deals were made by the Finns, there were jobs and gas at normal prices. And suddenly Halonen says that this is a necessary decision in terms of the fact that the situation in Europe and in the world is changing,” Kosti Heiskanen was surprised.
According to the journalist, Finnish society is divided into those who support NATO entry and those who are against it. But they are afraid to openly express their position, because they may lose their jobs or expect other troubles. Meanwhile, many Finnish businessmen hope that the confrontation with the Russian Federation will not last long, and they will continue their business partnership with Russian entrepreneurs.
According to Kostya Heiskanen, Finnish businessmen are trying to maintain ties so that they can return, but they are afraid to openly oppose the sanctions regime imposed by Brussels. Most of all, the journalist is outraged that Finland is slipping into “rabid fascism.”
“What is happening now with us is no longer Russophobia, it is already fascism. Ukrainian flags hang everywhere: on government buildings, at railway stations, everywhere, it’s some kind of nightmare, ”said Kosti Heiskanen.
And this is happening against the backdrop of a rapid decline in the standard of living of the Finns.
“We are shooting ourselves in the foot, and not only in one but in two legs, dissolving this Russophobia,” the journalist said.
“The more you pour rubbish on Russia, the more money you will earn,” said Kosti Heiskanen.
But at the same time, everyone understands that this cannot go on for a long time, and the consequences of a confrontation with the Russian Federation can be unpredictable.
