Yhdysvaltain viranomaiset etsivät kuumeisesti asemiestä, jonka epäillään surmanneen kuusi nuorta Wisconsinissa. Eräiden tietojen mukaan tappaja olisi paikallisen poliisilaitoksen apulaissheriffi.

Crandon Police Chief John Dennee, speaking outside the police department about two blocks from the shooting site, would not say whether the suspect was dead. But he said: "We're not looking for anybody anymore."

A dispatcher for the State Patrol who declined to give his full name as a matter of department practice said several of the patrol's officers went to Forest County to help investigators because the suspect is an employee of the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer for the Crandon Police Department.

"It's a pretty tragic situation here," said Forest County Supervisor Tom Vollmar, who lives just outside Crandon, a city of about 2,000 people. "There are five or six people dead."

The State Patrol and the Crandon Fire Department detoured a steady stream of traffic from two blocks of U.S. Highway 8 in the downtown area. Some residents stood in nearby front yards.

Earlier in the day, Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley told FOX News that the town was under a "gag order" regarding the overnight event but no one in the town can leave church, home or anywhere else they happened to be Sunday morning.

A witness told WMTJ Radio that gunfire erupted in the home at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Ten area youths from the ages of 16 to 21 were reportedly in the home when the shots were fired. Fatalities are being reported, but the number of casualties is still unconfirmed.

A family member of one of the victims told WITI-TV, a FOX affiliate, that one of the victims involved in the shooting is a student at the Milwaukee Area Technical College.

The town of Crandon is located about 100 miles north of Green Bay. The area is known for logging, and fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.

A small logging town in northern Wisconsin was in mourning today after a police officer shot dead six teenagers and recent graduates from the local high school who had gathered for an evening of pizza and movies. The officer was later shot and killed by fellow police.

News reports from Crandon, a close-knit town of 2,000 people, suggested the suspected gunman and his victims were part of the same circle of friends - high school students and recent graduates, who had gathered for a house party.

For a small town like Crandon, where the victims and the gunmen were all well known, the familiarity, as well as the relative youth of all those involved, compounded the horror of the events.

Those killed at the scene of the party included four women, aged 14 to 18, and two men believed to be 20 years old. Another man, aged 19, was in hospital in critical condition. Three of the women were still at secondary school. The other three victims had graduated since 2005, school officials told reporters.

The gunman, Tyler Peterson, 20, was also believed to have graduated in 2005 and worked full-time as a deputy sheriff and part-time as a local officer, the local police chief, John Dennee, told reporters. Peterson was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

Local people said there was no sign that Peterson was troubled. "He was an A student. He was a good kid," Frank Bocek, a local resident told CNN. "You would never have thought this would come from a young kid like that."

Cody Hanson, 17, a classmate of two of the victims, was also shocked. "I've seen him, I've talked to him. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would do that," he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The mother of the youngest victim, Lindsey Stahl, 14, told reporters she believed he may have been angry with a former girlfriend.

"I'm waiting for somebody to wake me up right now. This is a bad, bad dream," Jenny Stahl told local reporters. "All I heard it was a jealous boyfriend and he went berserk. He took them all out."

The rampage appears to have started on what should have been a festive weekend - the annual autumn homecoming ritual when recent graduates return to their high school.

A group of friends had gathered in an apartment when the suspected gunman arrived shortly before 3am (9am BST) yesterday, according to news reports.

Local residents who lived a few doors away from the house, shown on television behind police barricades yesterday, described hearing the sounds of gunshots at about 3am.

"I heard probably five or six shots, a short pause and then five or six more," Marci Franz, a local resident, told the Associated Press. "I wasn't sure if it was gunfire initially. I thought some kids were messing around and hitting a nearby metal building." Then she heard eight louder shots and tyres squealing, she said.

It was unclear how or when the episode ended but the town mayor, Gary Bradley, told reporters the gunman had been shot dead by a police sniper, apparently some time after his attack on the party.

Viikonlopun joukkosurman taustalla oli mustasukkaisuusdraama. 20-vuotias osa-aikainen oikeudenvalvoja Tyler Peterson oli vieraillut entisen tyttöystävänsä kotona syyttäen naista toisen miehen tapailemisesta, mutta häntä oli käsketty poistumaan. Sunnuntain aamutunteina Peterson palasi kuitenkin uudelleen, tällä kertaa rynnäkkökiväärin kanssa.

Viranomaiset paljastivat tapahtumaketjusta keskiviikkona uusia yksityiskohtia. Peterson oli surmannut heti saavuttuaan kolme entisen ystävättärensä juhlavierasta olohuoneen sohvalle. 18-vuotias tyttöystävä löytyi surmattuna keittiöstä.

The sole survivor of Sunday's shooting rampage in Wisconsin "played dead" after a sheriff's deputy shot him three times, Wisconsin's attorney general said Tuesday.

After Tyler Peterson shot him once, Charlie Neitzel, 21, begged him to stop. But Peterson fired again. Neitzel fell to the floor, was shot a third time, and didn't move.

"Playing dead until Peterson left, Neitzel survived," Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said.

Neitzel underwent surgery Tuesday and was in stable condition Tuesday night, a hospital employee told CNN.

The families of the six slain young people -- all current or former graduates of Crandon High School in Crandon, Wisconsin, asked that media leave them alone in their grief, Van Hollen told reporters.

But the families of the victims also wanted it known that they had met with Peterson's family.

"They hold no animosity toward them," Van Hollen said, conveying the families' wishes that the Peterson family be allowed space and time to heal.

On Sunday around 2 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) Peterson, a full-time Forest County Sheriff's deputy, went to a party at a home in the small town of Crandon apparently to make amends with an ex-girlfriend, a friend of Peterson's told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Peterson argued with Jordanne Murray, accusing her of dating someone else, said Van Hollen.

Peterson lost control after people called him a "worthless pig," Peterson's friend Mike Kegley told the paper.

Peterson left the party and got a police-style AR-15 rifle from his truck, forced his way back into the apartment and fired about 30 rounds at about 2:45 a.m. (3:45 a.m. ET).

Six people were killed. According to The Associated Press, investigators found three bodies on or next to a couch -- Lindsey Stahl, 14; Aaron Smith, 20; and Bradley Schultz, 20.

Murray, 18, was found in the kitchen. Lianna Thomas, 18, was found in a closet, and Katrina McCorkle, 18, was just outside it. Both had apparently been trying to hide, Van Hollen said, according to AP.

Neitzel was the last person shot, Van Hollen said.

Less than 20 minutes later, a patrolling Crandon police officer, reported hearing gunfire and approached the apartment building to investigate, Van Hollen said. The officer, Greg Carter, 21, said he saw Peterson exit the building with a rifle, and momentarily lost sight of him. Then, Carter "heard multiple rounds of gunfire" and Carter's windshield burst, Van Hollen said.

Van Hollen said Peterson drove "aimlessly" through three Wisconsin counties and made false calls to authorities to "throw police off his tail."

He eventually stopped in Argonne, Wisconsin, where he spoke to friends and confessed, Van Hollen said.

Peterson was killed in a shootout with law officers Sunday after negotiations for his surrender failed. The details of the negotiations are not being released at this time pending an ongoing investigation, Van Hollen said Tuesday.
