Hamas planned 'second October 7th' attack on Europe for 2025, German prosecutors reveal

German authorities have uncovered evidence that Hamas was planning large-scale attacks on European soil, including a potential "second October 7th" event for 2025. The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has arrested nine men since October last year in connection with the plot, which involved a weapons smuggling network spanning multiple countries and targeted Jewish and Israeli facilities across Europe.
The investigation revealed an extensive Hamas operation stretching from Greece and Cyprus through Germany to Austria and Scandinavia. Federal Prosecutor General Jens Rommel believes the suspects had set a specific date for their planned attack: October 7, 2025, the second anniversary of Hamas's assault on Israel. Authorities also discovered a pre-recorded confession video during their investigation.
Greek arrest exposes bomb plot
In early June, a Greek special unit arrested a 37-year-old Egyptian of Palestinian origin, identified by Greek media as Motasem, in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. He had been working as an electrician at a luxury hotel. Police found chemicals, a precision scale, and bomb-making equipment in his Athens apartment.
Greek authorities had been tracking Motasem following a tip from Cypriot police, who had arrested two Palestinians connected to him near Larnaca two weeks earlier. The surveillance operation was codenamed "Odin". Investigators believe this cell was preparing an attack on an Israeli cruise ship that regularly docks in Greek ports and has been a frequent target of anti-Israeli protests.
Weapons smuggled across Europe
Investigators reconstructed a network that successfully moved weapons across Europe for months. In summer 2025, approximately five Glock pistols were transported from Denmark via Berlin to Vienna. Danish citizen Yousif C. handed the weapons to a German intermediary in Berlin, who passed them to Mohammed A., who had traveled from Great Britain. Mohammed A. transported the weapons to a hideout in Vienna, which Austrian authorities uncovered in November last year.
The network smuggled at least 13 pistols, an AK-47 assault rifle, and over 900 rounds of ammunition through Scandinavia, Germany, and Austria. Arrests occurred in Copenhagen, at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, Larnaca, London, Vienna, and Berlin in cooperation with European authorities.
The evidence from Athens, Berlin, and Vienna indicates that Europe has become more than just a fundraising haven for Hamas. The continent must now prepare for the possibility that the terror organization is willing to export the Middle East conflict to European soil.
