What do Alabamians earn relative to other states?
Why not ask the Walton family?
Walmart pays its regular, full-time hourly associates in Alabama an average hourly wage of $12.27, its corporate website shows.
That amount is nearly 40 cents lower per hour than what associates earn in Florida, and 30 cents lower than the average wage Walmart pays its associates in Georgia.
Out of the four states that border Alabama, only regular full-time Walmart employs in Mississippi earn less per hour on average ($12.17). Associates in Louisiana ($12.41) and South Carolina ($12.49) also earn more on average.
Over the course of a 40-hour work week, the average wage for Walmart employees in Alabama translates to a $490.80 paycheck before taxes. The 3 percent difference in Florida results in a weekly paycheck roughly $15 greater than in Alabama.
Why the discrepancy? "Differences in the job market could account for some of the differences in our average wages from state to state," says W.C. Wertz, a divisional director with the company.
Another factor: more Walmarts. The company has 35,567 associates at 92 Supercenters in Alabama, compared to 27,352 associates at 74 Supercenters in South Carolina -- a marked difference for two states with roughly the same population.
